5 Ways To Lose Weight Without Going Low Carb.
Low-carb dieting has been
having a moment, and then some. For years now, women have flocked to diets
like Whole30, Paleo, and even a resurgence of Atkins. It’s not
without good reason: In the short term, these diets can be effective for those
looking to slim down. In the long run, though, they do come with some
drawbacks.
Heather Caplan, R.D., a
Washington, D.C., sports nutritionist, says the low-carb approach will amount
to relatively fast results. “The majority of what we eat is carbohydrate based,
so there’s plenty of room to reduce them by cutting out desserts, snacks, and
processed foods,” she says. “This will lead to weight loss and
feeling good.”
But the approach has its
limits, both in terms of weight loss and longer-term health impacts. “Eventually,
if you omit all carbohydrates, there are metabolic implications, especially if
you omit fat at the same time,” says Ellie Kempton, R.D., owner of Denver-based
Simply Nourished. “Even if you choose to emphasize fat and limit carbohydrates,
you still need enough carbohydrates to fuel the brain, adrenal glands, and
thyroid, all three of which are crucial for energy, sleep, and weight.”

Both nutritionists are fans
of nixing the highly-processed carbs that are common in the American diet. “I
teach each and every one of my clients to decrease processed sugar/carb
intake,” says Kempton. “My qualm stems from cutting out all carb intake because
extreme low-carb weight-loss strategies only work for so long.”

6 Things That Happen To Your Body On A Ketogenic Diet.
By now, you've probably heard of the ketogenic diet, or a low-carb, high-fat diet. It’s a popular diet trend among athletes and average folk alike. (Who doesn't love the idea of eating more steak and bacon?) But what actually happens to your body when you go on the ketogenic diet?
To
understand how the ketogenic diet works, you have to understand ketosis, the process by which your body is starved of glucose
for fuel and must look to fat sources instead. Typically, you fuel your body by
giving it glucose in the form of carbs, which can be found in flour,
grains, vegetables, legumes, dairy products, and fruits.
We usually introduce a steady stream of this type of fuel
into our bodies with each meal or snack, explains Pamela Nisevich Bede MS, RD, CSSD, LD.
These carbohydrates are usually the body’s first choice when looking for an
instant fix.
“When a carb is available, the body will naturally turn to this to make
energy instead of dietary fat or stored body fat. However, when we remove
carbohydrates from our diet, our bodies begin to break down fat and turn to a
fuel source in the form of ketones, which is more efficient but generally
underutilized,” explains Bede.
Ketones are a substance
produced by the liver when the body breaks down fat for energy, which are then
released into the blood. Your body's cells use ketones to power everyday
activities. When there’s a buildup of ketones in the blood and you’re
switching gears into an ketogenic state, your body changes in some incredible
ways.

Is Rapid Weight Loss Safe?
Plenty of popular diets and
supplements on the market promise that you can lose weight quickly and keep it
off. It sounds a little too good to be true, but we’ve all heard it before:
“Lose 10 pounds in 10 days!”
But can you really
drop weight this fast? And if you can, is rapid weight loss safe?
How Fast Should I Lose Weight?
Most people who want to lose weight
want it to happen quickly. While that’s understandable, the most common advice
is to slim down slowly.
But how slow is “slow”? Generally,
experts suggest that healthy weight loss is the gradual loss of about one
to two pounds per week. Losing weight faster than this can be considered “rapid.”
